Step into the vibrant world of Melbourne's premier swing dance classes and experience the joy, energy, and connection of the retro jazz era. Whether you are searching for dynamic Lindy Hop lessons, authentic Charleston footwork, or a welcoming social dance community, our expert-led programs are designed to take you from your very first basic step to confident social dancing.

Swing dancing is far more than just a style of movement; it is an immersive, global culture rooted in African American jazz traditions of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Centered around upbeat rhythms, syncopated beats, and expressive partner communication, disciplines like Lindy Hop offer a phenomenal full-body workout that improves cardiovascular health, coordination, and posture. Best of all, you do not need to bring a partner or have any prior dance experience to get started. Our classes rotate partners naturally, fostering a warm, inclusive, and social environment where making new friends is just as easy as mastering a swingout.

Melbourne boasts a thriving, world-renowned vintage dance scene, and our curriculum is tailored to help you tap straight into it. From casual practice sessions to live-band social dances across the city, we provide a clear pathway from our foundational beginner courses to advanced technical workshops. Every lesson is taught by seasoned instructors dedicated to breaking down complex rhythms into digestible, fun movements that build your musicality and physical confidence.

Ready to transform your week, learn a timeless skill, and become part of Melbourne's most energetic community? Explore our current timetable, choose a studio location near you, and secure your spot in our upcoming beginner swing dance intake today.

I was a total newbie in West Coast Swing when I joined the beginners 4-week block for the first time. I did not have much experience in dancing prior to that. Learning WCS was a personal challenge, but after 1.5 years of dancing at this studio, I can say that was definitely one of my best decisions.

The moment I stepped through the door, I felt so welcomed. The teachers are amazing — super skilled, but also really good at breaking everything down in a way that makes sense. The classes are well-structured, and you always leave feeling like you’ve learned something new.

The Night Owls

Fitzroy · 7 reviews on Google · 5 sessions per week

The Night Owls bring blues and swing dancing to Melbourne with warmth, musicality, and genuine community. Run by Shob and Andy, the classes are known for their welcoming atmosphere and thoughtful teaching — the kind of space where beginners feel safe and experienced dancers keep growing.

Blues classes run Thursday evenings at I.AM.DANCE in Fitzroy, with a vocabulary builder for returning dancers followed by a beginner-friendly fundamentals class. Saturday afternoons are for swing — fundamentals class at 2pm followed by open social swing. Saturday nights bring the Slow Jam, an open social blues event where the community dances into the evening.

Blues dancing is expressive, grounded, and deeply musical. It's a partner dance that draws from African-American vernacular traditions, built on connection, rhythm, and feeling the music in your body. Swing is its high-energy cousin — playful, bouncy, and endlessly fun. Both are completely improvised. No partner needed.

The Night Owls are part of the Evomove network. One weekly membership gives you unlimited access to every Night Owls class and social, plus every other session on the network — tango, West Coast Swing, salsa, yoga, contemporary, and more.

Such a great environment to learn this most versatile dance. Shob and Andy share concepts and then show how to apply them in a fun and focused environment. And there’s a mini social at the end of every class to add to the goodness.

Shob and Andy’s blues classes felt welcoming and supportive. They have clearly dedicated a lot of time and effort to understanding the roots of the dance, music and culture, and they share this knowledge in every class.

Swing — frequently asked questions

Do I need a partner to join your swing dance classes?
No, you do not need to bring a partner. We rotate partners regularly throughout our classes, which allows everyone to practice comfortably, meet new people, and learn both lead and follow roles if desired.
What should I wear to my first Lindy Hop class?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and stretch. For footwear, choose flat, lightweight shoes with smooth soles that allow you to pivot easily on wooden dance floors, such as sneakers, flats, or Keds. Avoid rubber-soled runners that stick to the floor.
Are beginner swing classes suitable for absolute novices with no dance experience?
Yes, our beginner courses are designed specifically for people who have never danced before. We break down every rhythm, footwork pattern, and connection technique step-by-step in a fun, relaxed environment.
What is the difference between Swing dancing and Lindy Hop?
Swing is a broad family of jazz dances developed in the 1920s to 1940s. Lindy Hop is the most famous and foundational style of swing dancing, characterized by its energetic improvisations, partner connection, and the iconic "swingout." Other styles include Charleston, Balboa, and Collegiate Shrug.
How old do I need to be to attend Melbourne swing dance classes?
Our classes are open to participants of all adult age groups, from university students to active seniors. The community is multigenerational, welcoming, and centered around a shared love of vintage jazz music and dance.
How do class rotations work?
During our social dance classes, participants rotate partners every few minutes. This is standard practice in the global swing community because it accelerates learning, improves adaptability, and creates a friendly, social atmosphere where everyone dances with everyone.
Is swing dancing a good workout?
Yes, Lindy Hop is a high-energy aerobic activity. A single social dance session can burn significant calories, elevate your heart rate, and dramatically improve your cardiovascular endurance, core strength, agility, and balance.
Where are swing dance classes located in Melbourne?
There are regular weekly classes and social events at accessible studio locations across Melbourne, including venues in the inner north, inner west, and central business district. Check our current timetable for specific studio addresses and public transport access.
How do I transition from beginner classes to social dancing?
Social dancing is built into our philosophy from day one. Alongside your weekly technical classes, we host regular practice nights, student socials, and live-music events across Melbourne where you can test out your moves and dance with the broader community.

Started WCS about a year ago with zero dance experience. Chris and Jackie make it so easy to pick up — they’re patient, encouraging, and genuinely excited when you nail something. The monthly socials are a highlight and the community is lovely.

Best thing I’ve done for myself in years. The classes are well-structured and the progression from beginner to improver feels natural. Love that you can dance WCS to basically any music — makes the socials so much fun.

— Member , WCS Melbourne · ★★★★★

My wife and I joined together and we’ve both gotten so much out of it. The teaching is clear and builds logically. What surprised us most is how social it is — we’ve made genuine friends here, not just dance partners.

— Member , WCS Melbourne · ★★★★★

Really well-run classes. The vibe is relaxed but you definitely learn properly. I appreciate that they rotate partners so everyone gets to dance with different people — it makes you a better dancer and you meet everyone.

I joined for dance but ended up trying strength and yoga. Having it all on one membership means I actually go — there's always something on, no matter what my week looks like.

— Network member

The teachers are incredible. Every class is run by someone who actually cares about what they teach. It feels like joining a bunch of small communities, not a faceless gym.

I used to stop and start all the time. Since joining the network I haven't missed a week — when life gets in the way, I just shift to something else.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ɘvomove?

ɘvomove is a movement-network membership based in Melbourne. One weekly fee gives you unlimited access to classes across every independent operator on the network — dance, yoga, strength, martial arts and more. It's not an aggregator and it's not a gym chain. Each operator runs their own classes, their own way. ɘvomove is the membership that connects them into one network.

How much does it cost?

You pay a single weekly membership fee. No lock-in contracts, no joining fees, no hidden costs. One payment covers unlimited access to every class on the network.

How is this different from a gym or a ClassPass?

Gyms are one brand in one place. Aggregators sell sessions from studios that don't know you. ɘvomove is a network of independent teachers who run their own communities — you belong to the network, not a building. Every operator knows their craft, sets their own class style, and builds real relationships with the people in the room.

Can I just try one class?

Yes — most sessions offer a casual drop-in option so you can try before committing. You'll see the drop-in price on each session card. The membership just means you stop counting.

How do I cancel?

Cancel any time — no lock-in, no exit fees, no hoops. Your membership runs until the end of your current billing period after you cancel.

I teach movement — can I join the network?

Yes. If you're an independent movement operator and want to grow your community without the overhead of selling and managing memberships yourself, ɘvomove handles the membership, the payments and the admin. You keep your classes, your brand and your students. Learn more about joining as an operator.

Ready to move?

One membership. Every operator. Dance, strength, yoga, martial arts and an ever-growing list of movement across Melbourne. No lock-in. No per-class decisions. Just show up and move.
